Vinyl Patio Doors

What a Vinyl Patio Door is and How it Works?

A vinyl patio door is a wide glazed door with a multi-chamber uPVC frame that opens onto outdoor space. Most homes in the GTA fit a sliding two-panel layout, but three-panel, four-panel, and French (hinged) styles are also widely used. The vinyl frame holds a sealed glass unit with low-e coatings and argon gas between the panes, giving you the natural light of a window with the access of a full door. Vinyl sliding patio doors are the most common pick for Toronto homes because they need no swing room, fit tight floor plans, and pair well with most window styles.

Why Vinyl Outperforms Aluminum and Wood for Canadian Homes

Vinyl frames trap pockets of still air inside their chambers, which slows heat transfer in winter and blocks heat gain in summer. Aluminum conducts cold straight into your room, wood swells and rots without yearly upkeep, and fiberglass costs more without a clear gain in energy performance for most GTA homes. Vinyl sits in the ideal balance of price, durability, and insulation — that is why it leads the patio doors market in Canada.

Configurations

Patio Door Configurations We Build

TotalSeal builds vinyl patio doors in the layouts most requested by GTA homeowners. Each style fits a different opening width, traffic pattern, and room layout. Your project consultant will help match the configuration to your house and floor plan during the in-home visit.

2-Panel Sliding Patio Door

The two-panel slider has one fixed panel and one operable sash that glides on a stainless-steel-reinforced track. It fits standard 5-foot to 6-foot openings, opens with a single finger, and works in nearly any room. This is the most cost-effective layout and the one we install most often across Toronto, Mississauga, and Vaughan.

3-Panel Sliding Patio Door

A three-panel slider gives you one operable sash between two fixed panes, opening up wider sightlines for openings between 8 and 12 feet. It is a popular pick for kitchen-to-deck transitions and family rooms with a backyard view. The extra glass area pulls in more natural light without losing thermal performance.

4-Panel Sliding Patio Door

Four-panel sliding patio doors span openings up to 16 feet wide, with two operable sashes meeting in the middle or stacking to one side. They turn a back wall into a glass wall and work well for new builds, full renovations, and homes that face a private backyard, balconies, or pool deck.

French Patio Doors

French patio doors swing open on heavy duty hinges, with one or both panels active. They suit traditional and contemporary homes alike, work well where a slider track would interrupt furniture placement, and pair beautifully with sidelights and transoms to fill openings up to 8 feet wide.

TotalSeal Technology

TotalSeal Engineering
Inside Every Vinyl Patio Door

Behind every smooth glide is a stack of engineering choices. We use a multi-chamber uPVC frame with steel reinforced meeting stiles, Cardinal Glass insulating units, Edgetech Super Spacer warm-edge spacers, and Roto multi-point locking hardware. These parts are not optional add-ons — they come standard on every door we ship, and together they exceed industry standards for air, water, and structural performance under CAN/CSA-A440.

Glass Package Options

The glass package controls how much heat, sound, and UV your door blocks. Most homes do well with a double-glazed low e + argon unit. Bedrooms, busy roads, and west-facing walls benefit from triple glazing. Tempered glass is fitted on every operable sash to meet Ontario Building Code safety rules, and tinted glass is offered for added solar control on south-facing exposures.

Energy Star Certification

ENERGY STAR™ Certification

All TotalSeal vinyl patio doors are ENERGY STAR™ certified for Climate Zones 1 and 2, which cover Southern Ontario. To meet the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient threshold for 2026, sliding glass doors must hit a U-factor of 1.05 W/m²K or lower, or an ER of 40 or higher. Our triple glazing configurations clear that bar and deliver real energy savings on your monthly heating and cooling bills, with measurable cuts to heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

Security Hardware

Security Hardware

Patio doors are a common entry point in break-ins, so we build safety in at the frame stage. Each operable sash uses a Roto multi-point lock that engages two or three steel bolts into reinforced strike plates along the frame. A keyed cylinder is offered on the exterior, anti-lift blocks sit on the track, and tempered glass is standard on every panel. The result is hardware that holds up to daily use and resists forced entry far better than a single hook or key lock.

Customisation

Customise Your Vinyl Patio Door

Every TotalSeal patio door is built to order, so the look, feel, and finish match your home rather than the other way round. Choose your frame colour, glass, hardware, and grilles during the in-home consultation. The right combination will enhance your interior and create a clean line of sight from the kitchen or living room out to the deck.

Installation Process

How Our Installation Process Works

A patio door is only as good as the seal around it, so our crews follow a fixed installation workflow on every project. The full process from first call to clean-up usually runs four to six weeks: roughly two to three weeks of in-house manufacturing, plus a one-day install for a standard slider.

Free in-home consultation

We measure the rough opening, check the floor structure, and confirm the configuration that fits.

Manufacturing process

Your door is built to order in our Etobicoke facility on Pro-Line Automation machinery, with each frame welded, cut, and assembled in sequence.

Removal

The crew protects floors and walls, then removes the old door, frame, and waste.

Frame prep

We inspect the sill plate, repair rot if found, and fit new flashing and weather barrier.

Door set

The new vinyl unit is shimmed plumb and level, anchored, and squared to the rough opening.

Sealing

Low-expansion foam fills the perimeter cavity, followed by exterior caulking and interior trim.

Walk-through

We test the lock, the slide, the screen, and the drainage holes with you before we leave.

Message from Anna Klein,
Chief Operating Officer

A patio door takes more abuse than almost any other opening in your home — it gets opened thousands of times a year, slammed by kids, dragged on by dogs, and hit by every storm that rolls through the GTA. Building it ourselves means we know exactly how each part will hold up after a decade. That is the standard we install to.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know to start your project.

How long does a vinyl patio door last?

A quality vinyl patio door installed correctly will last 25 to 30 years in the GTA climate. Multi-chamber uPVC frames resist UV, do not rot, and never need painting. Lifespan depends most on hardware quality and installation, not the vinyl itself.

Are vinyl patio doors energy efficient?

Yes. A vinyl frame paired with double or triple glazing, low e glass, and argon gas fill delivers strong insulation in both winter and summer. ENERGY STAR™ certified models cut heating and cooling costs by roughly 15% versus older aluminum doors and qualify for Ontario rebates.

How secure is a vinyl sliding patio door?

A vinyl sliding patio door fitted with a multi-point lock, anti-lift blocks, and tempered glass is highly secure. TotalSeal includes Roto multi-point hardware on every door, which engages two to three steel bolts along the frame and is far harder to force than a single hook or key lock.

Can I get a vinyl patio door in black?

Yes. Black, dark bronze, sand, and commercial brown are all available in colour-fast vinyl finishes. You can also choose dual-tone — black exterior with a white interior is one of the most popular combinations for 2026.

How long does installation take?

A standard two-panel slider is removed and replaced in one working day. Larger three- or four-panel systems and French doors take one to two days. The longer wait is the manufacturing window before install, usually two to three weeks.

How do I clean and maintain a vinyl patio door?

Vinyl is built for low maintenance and easy cleaning. Wipe the frame down with mild soap and water two or three times a year, vacuum the track to keep dust out of the rollers, and lubricate the lock once a year. No painting, sealing, or staining is required over the door’s life.
